  + stars: | 2024-05-03 | by ( Vjosa Isai | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Three men were arrested Friday and charged in the killing of a Sikh leader in British Columbia, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of orchestrating, fraying relations between the two countries. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh nationalist and Canadian citizen, was gunned down last June by two masked assailants in the parking lot of the temple in Surrey, British Columbia, where he was president, according to the police. Three men, all Indian nationals in their 20s, were all arrested in Edmonton, Alberta and charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Police identified the men as Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreeet Singh. The police said the men had been living in Canada three to five years and were not permanent residents of Canada, but would not comment on their immigration status.

Rick Tocchet and Rick Bowness were together at NHL All-Star Weekend when news broke that the Winnipeg Jets traded for Sean Monahan. “It’s a great move by Winnipeg, great move by Vancouver getting our guy.”Toss in the Colorado Avalanche signing veteran winger Zach Parise around the same time, and the race for players is already well underway in the Western Conference. And there's still three weeks left until the March 8 deadline, as trade talk picks up and plenty more movement is expected. “Obviously, (we have) a lot of good players and a lot skill — strength throughout the whole lineup. CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has captured scintillating portraits of 19 spiral galaxies — and the millions of stars that call them home — in unprecedented detail never seen before by astronomers. Astronomers believe that about 60% of all galaxies are spiral galaxies — and our solar system resides in one of the spiral arms of the Milky Way galaxy. Webb’s observations can help astronomers better understand star formation and the evolution of spiral galaxies like our own. The James Webb Space Telescope captured images of 19 spiral galaxies in near- and mid-infrared light. The images will be used to help astronomers determine the distribution of gas and dust in spiral galaxies, as well as how galaxies both nurture and cease the formation of stars.

He believes AI assistants will become a common tool for salespeople and executives across real estate and the wider business world. Even boosters of the new tech's expanded role in the real-estate business acknowledge that chatbots could become viewed as a nuisance, a gimmick, or worse. "This is and always will be a relationship driven business," Dirkschneider said. But "the more advanced AI becomes, the less some of our services are needed, and that's what can get scary."

November 21 - The Florida Panthers, who will go for their third straight win when they play host to the Boston Bruins Wednesday night, are getting an unexpected contribution from defenseman Niko Mikkola. July 1, the Panthers signed Mikkola to a three-year, $7.8 million contract. Indeed, in just 18 games this season, Mikkola - who made his NHL debut in January 2020 - has already matched his career high with three goals. The Bruins led that series 3-1 before Florida won the next two and then took Game 7 in overtime. That game was atypical for Boston as the Bruins have allowed more than two goals just four times this season -- all losses.

Leonid meteor shower peaks this weekend

CNN —Up next for end-of-year celestial spectaculars is the Leonid meteor shower, set to produce bright meteors with persistent trains streaking across the night sky. The moon will be 23% full on the night of the shower’s peak, according to the American Meteor Society. Leo is the meteor shower’s radiant, which is the point where the phenomenon appears to originate from, she explained. As the comet travels around the sun, it leaves a trail of rocks and dust that appears as the annual Leonid meteor shower when Earth moves through the debris while on its own orbital path. “Getting out and seeing any meteor shower for the first time is always fun,” she said.
